You Must Remember This...

From mid-1943 through February 1946, there was a military presence in Algona. Either in the planning stages of the camp, construction, internment of POWs, or dismantling stages, American military personnel lived and worked in Algona. Who were these men and women? This exhibit introduces you to these Americans from all around the country. They guarded prisoners, ran the operations of the camp, and interacted with the local civilian population. In addition, they lived in the community and enjoyed a rich social life there. Eight of the soldiers met local women and were married. Several remained in Algona the rest of their lives.
